Abstract

The contribution aims to reconstruct the so far unresearched life of the Hamburg-born painter Eduard Lind. He came to Maribor at the end of 1855, settled in the city as well as lived and worked there until his death in 1904. The first commissions in Maribor included painting the ceiling of the city’s new cadet school, constructed between 1853 and 1856. Lind became part of the Maribor Evangelical community and a member of the presbytery. As may be gathered from written sources, he was a popular citizen of Maribor and an acknowledged painter. He portrayed many citizens and produced the oil painting of the Crucified Christ, which was mounted in the newly constructed Evangelical church in 1869. Lind died in great poverty and was buried at the expense of the Evangelical community.
