Abstract

Following the resolution of the World Council for Peace, the 350th birthday of Evangelista Torricelli, the outstanding Italian scientist, was celebrated this year by the entire civilized world. Many Soviet organizations — The Physics and Mathematical Division of the Academy of Sciences, the Institute of History of Natural Sciences and Technology of the Academy of Sciences, the Union of Soviet Societies for Friendship and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, the U.S.S.R. — Italy Society, the Soviet Committee for the Maintenance of Peace — held a joint session on October 16, 1958 to commemorate this outstanding date. The introductory address was delivered by Academician N. N. Andreev; a paper Torricelli as a Mathematician was delivered by corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R., B. N. Delone; Professor V. P. Zubov lectured on Torricelli's experiments in Florence.
