Abstract

The debate as to how public finances will be managed in the next 2–5 years continues to rage, and much of the information published in the media since the start of the new coalition government in May has not made comfortable reading. Reports suggest up to 25% of public money may have to be saved in forthcoming years (Butler, 2010). This in turn raises the question of how this will affect the NHS and those of us working in the world of gastrointestinal (GI) nursing. The specific details are not yet known. The government spending review, due on 20 October 2010, will dictate how public money and funding for the NHS is allocated, budgeted and managed over the forthcoming years (HM Treasury, 2010).
