Abstract

The availability and affordability of liability insurance have drawn a lot of Congressional attention since January. Currently, at least five committees are seeking solutions to what many see as a crisis. They are the Senate's Commerce, Science & Transportation, and Small Business committees; and the House's Energy & Commerce, Public Works & Transportation, and Ways & Means committees. And now, the Administration is joining the search. An interagency working group on tort policy has come up with eight recommendations that it says should significantly alleviate the crisis in insurance availability and affordabilty. Its recommendations have been endorsed by President Reagan, and a legislative package implementing them is expected to arrive shortly on Capitol Hill, if it hasn't already.
