Abstract

AbstractSwift Heavy ion (SHI) irradiation of polymeric materials changes their free volume properties which are strongly correlated to their macroscopic structure. 250 μm thick Polyamide Nylon‐6,6(PN‐6,6) polymer films were irradiated with 50 MeV Li3+ ions from Pelletron accelerator to the fluences of 5 x 1010, 1011, 5 x 1011, 1 x 1012, 5 x 1012, 1013 and 3.5 x 1013 ions/cm2. The effect of heavy ion irradiation on the free volume was studied by Positron Annihilation Lifetime (PAL) and Doppler Broadening Spectroscopy (DBS). Mean free volume hole radius, free volume and fractional free volume of micro‐voids, obtained from o‐Ps lifetime decrease with fluence and is attributed to cross linking. S parameter which is supposed to change due to vacancies type defects created due to SHI irradiation also decreases. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
