Abstract
In this interview, Mark Gevisser reflects on the modes in which South Africa is considered progressive when it comes to LGBTQI rights and how it differs from the rest of Africa in this regard. Developing some of the most significant issues faced by LGBTQI people today, Gevisser considers the role of the South African constitution in the development of queer rights, activism against homophobia, the growth of trans rights, and the struggles faced by those seeking asylum in South Africa because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
