Abstract

Objective: To determine factors associated with the expression of sexual orientation and gender identity in lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people. Material and methods: Analytical and cross-sectional study, from secondary sources, based on the “First Virtual Survey for LGBTI People” in 2017, in which records of 9526 people were analyzed. Absolute and relative frequencies were estimated, and the chi-square test (x2) was used at a 95% confidence level. Results: 59% of the people did not express their sexual orientation and gender identity. Respecting personal factors, in the group of people that expressed it, 38% knew about institutions that defend their rights, and 32% considered that there is respect for this population. Also, having a family member that knew their sexual option (89,5%) and having a partner (51,9%) were the most frequent family factors in this group of people. Regarding social factors, the majority of people who expressed their sexual orientation and gender identity had not suffered discrimination (32,6%), participated in social organizations (40,5%), and civic activities (73%). Conclusions: Personal, family, and social factors studied were associated with the expression of their sexual orientation and gender identity in lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people.
