Abstract

This paper concerns work underway to improve public access to patent databases. It reports on the LEXITRAN project (LEXIcon TRANslation project). ∗ This project is being carried out in collaboration between one of Europe's largest information vendors, QUESTEL, and two research laboratories from the CNRS and the Paris School of Mines. The goal of the project is three-fold: (1) apply natural language processing techniques to build technological lexicons in order to index the patents distributed over the International Patent Classification System (IPC); (2) use the results of this indexation in order to create a natural language gateway to the IPC; (3) explore the hierarchical structure of the IPC using this natural language interface in order to aid the end-user in formulating his or her patent search query.
