Abstract
Analysis of the responses to some apparently unremarkable nouns in a survey administered to impoverished Mexican-American residents of a Texas bordercity illuminates the complexity of such issues as the notion of "fate" and the extent of reliance on traditional healing. Careful linguistic interpretation of these responses, in light of more traditional ethnographic data, indicates practices and points of view at odds with the initial impression and with some reports of certain other Mexican-American populations.
