Abstract
The decay of 17.8 min 88Rb to levels of 88Sr has been examined with the use of Ge(Li) and NaI(Tl) γ-ray detectors and a γ-γ coincidence spectrometer. Observation of the decay of the β-ray activity gave a half-life of 17.78 ± 0.11 min. Some 14 γ-rays were observed and placed in a decay scheme. On the basis of the proposed decay scheme and of a direct comparison of total β-ray activity with the intensity of the 1836 keV γ-ray, it was determined that 76.2 ± 4.0 % of the β-disintegrations proceed to the ground state. The remainder populate 88Sr levels at 1836, 2734, 3220, 3488, 3635, 4414, 4513, 4745, 4845 and 4854 keV. The properties of the levels are discussed in the framework of the quasi-particle and spherical vibrational models.
