Abstract

It is suggested that, in pregnancy, fetal leucocytes cross the placental barrier provoking formation of multiple antibodies which are mopped up by immune reaction with placental tissue antigens. Fibrin produced as a result of this reaction collects in the intervillous space and is in part reabsorbed and deposited passively in maternal glomeruli in toxæmia of pregnancy. In Rh incompatibility leucocyte-provoked antibodies block the production of maternal Rh antibodies until after delivery, and, when there is a striking tissue incompatibility, prevent Rh immunisation altogether.
