Abstract

On 2 March 1945 over 1,200 bombers of the 8th US Air Force attacked the oil refineries in Ruhland, Böhlen, Rositz and Magdeburg. Bad weather forced the bombers to disperse, and they were attacked by German fighter planes. One air-to-air combat took place over the town of Slaný. A formation of 12 B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 398th Bomb Group attacked several Focke-Wulf Fw 190s of the Jagdgeschwader 301. A bomber (No. 44-6573) crashed south of the town on a field. Only one man survived from nine-man crew. One German fighter plane crashed near Třebíz, and its pilot died. Another German plane made an emergency landing near Vrbičany. American fighters subsequently entered the battle, and they shot down another German fighter near Řeporyje.
