Abstract

The research presented in this paper focuses on understanding areas in which building information modeling (BIM) is being utilized in general contracting companies and what these companies have as lessons learned from utilizing BIM. The authors conducted extended interviews with professionals (such as BIM managers, project managers, planners) from two different general contracting companies over various projects. The discussions were held such that each participant provided his/her experience over a project, where BIM was used for at least one phase of a construction project. The results of the discussions and interviews provided a wide range of case studies (in overall eight cases) on BIM utilization and lessons learned by project members related to BIM usage on these case projects. This paper provides an overview of each case project, introduces the phases of projects where BIM was helpful, and provides findings on lessons learned by project members with BIM usage. Practically, the lessons learned from these contracting companies can be helpful for construction professionals to improve their practices of BIM usage.
