Abstract
I really did not know much about when I made my first trip there in 1993 to speak at a historic Asia-Pacific Migration Affecting Australia conference in Darwin, the small capital port city for the Northern Territory, located in the north central part of the country closest to East Timor, Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Of course, my mind was filled with iconic images of kangaroos, koala bears, the Sydney Opera House, shrimp on the barbie, the Great Barrier Reef, and Crocodile Dundee. I had read about Aboriginals, as well the infamous White Policy, but knew very little else.
