Abstract
Indonesia is located along the path of the Pacific Ring of Fire, home of about 83 active volcanoes, and is operating 3 research reactors. The volcanic eruptions in Indonesia occurred several times in recent years. Mount Merapi eruption located in Yogyakarta, Central java occurred in 2010 and the eruption of Mount Kelud located in Kediri, East Java occurred in February 2014. The later spread volcanic ash reaching Kartini research reactor located in Yogyakarta city, and is concerned to have an impact on the operational safety of the reactor. This paper will discuss how to deal with the impact of volcanic ash on Kartini reactor and lesson learned for other operating nuclear reactors around the world.
