Abstract
In this article, I propose to use the text of the Hermeneumata Pseudo-Dositheana (see Dionisotti 1982, pp. 83-125), written, according to the editor, at the end of the 4th century, as evidence for the diet of a family of medium status in Gaul. The text demonstrates that the daily diet of a “middle class” Roman family was mainly vegetarian. We can observe the same continuity in the Visigothic period in Spain, according to the evidence of the slates written in Latin from the 6th-7th centuries, and other literary texts.
