Abstract

In this technical ministry, racial laws were enforced in a general sense but were not specifically anti-Semitic. Out of the 34 denounced employees, two-thirds were laid off. Three were killed after they were reported to the occupiers. The ministry was in no way affiliated with the killings. A detailed study of these three cases illustrates the different attitudes of the department leaders. The General Secretariat used Vichy’s laws opportunistically to dismiss psychotic employees, and the Rural Engineering and Forestry Departments attempted to circumvent the law in order to retain highly esteemed agents. This article also studies the administrative and judicial response to the three cases after Liberation.
