Abstract

The Portuguese Familiars of the Duchess of Burgundy, Isabelle de Portugal (1430-1471). The presence of Portuguese fellowmen, arrived with her in 1430 or later around 1450, among Isabelle de Portugal's familiar is revealed by the Burgundy accounts and the mortgage-bond entry of her mansion. The men hold offices that place them in the duchess's vicinity, they are paid regular wages and some of them are awarded a charge in her property. The maids of honour, who are also paid wages after 1445, are richly endowed and given in marriage by Isabelle, according to their rank. Jean, Jacques and Béatrice de Coïmbre, her nephews and niece who had taken refuge in Flanders, benefited from her protection and generosity, especially Béatrice, as demonstrated by her marriage contract with Adolphe de Clèves in 1453, edited in Annex.
