Abstract

Sparta experienced great troubles in the second quarter of Vth century, in the beginning of IVth century and especially in the second half of IIIrd-century, when reforming or revolutionary kings tried to recreate some sort of equality. But, in general, the lot of poor citizens is seldom recalled. According to the rule, they stay out of the sussitia, but they fight in the army, attend the assembly and perhaps are even eligible for the office of ephor. They were similar to rich people, when everyone had a very simple way of life, but, in more recent periods, they end up being the clients of the very wealthy happy few.
