Abstract

In the Seine estuary, hunters, anglers, foragers, and naturalists chose to share their interests by getting involved in environmental awareness-raising measures. Based on 20 interviews, this work presents their motives for this involvement. A comparison is made of the ways in which they practice their pursuits and the methods used to convince the general public of the importance of preserving the natural environment. The analysis shows links between physical immersion in nature, evidence of the ‘savage mind’ at work, and the beliefs they try to share. These four hunter-gatherer activities help us to redefine what we mean by leisure, since they contribute to raising ecological and, therefore, political awareness.
