Abstract
The Chavanon metamorphic sequence, located in the center of the French Massif Central, mainly constituted of gneisses and micaschists, contains some marbles lenses which have been exploited since the first half of the 19th century, maybe even earlier. Those rocks, mainly constituted of calcite, occur as hectometric lenses within gneisses. The successive exploitation have taken place both from as surface quarries and underground works. The marble was mainly used to make lime.
