Abstract
Ethiopian french-speaking railwaymen in Ethiopia ; Through a qualitative analysis of interviews in French with Ethiopian rail workers, I propose to examine the links built up between French language and railway identity in a non-francophone context. The railway track between Djibouti and Addis Ababa has been built at the beginning of the 20th century by French engineers who have imported their language as a working language. Little by little, French has been imposed as a language with a professional prestige, associated with Amharic, the largest spoken language in Ethiopia. The rail workers remember that time as a myth : the myth of a “ golden age” (the sixties), associated in their speech with a pride based on francophonia, as well as on their professional and Ethiopian identity.
