Abstract

The article presents a comparison of occupational plans and dreams of two cohorts of comprehensive school leavers at 16 years of age in Finland : those who finished comprehensive school - the primary level of education - in 1977 (n = 778) and those who left school in 1989 (n = 607). Preferences, plans and dreams were quite the same in both cohorts. Changes occur relatively slow. Differences in occupational orientation between genders were clear in 1977 and 1989. More differences were revealed between girls, which means that girls orientate more flexibly than boys. Traditional women occupations in the field of nursing and education lost their attractiveness during the 1980s. Interest in creative and enterprising occupations became stronger, which can be interpreted according to changes in women’s culture. On one hand this reflects changes in societal values.
