Abstract

The French Islands of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a Département d'Outre-Mer (" Overseas Département ") since 1976, keep a few documents of the i8th Century and some public archives, som of which quite substantial, since 1816. They are an essential source for the history of the Islands and of fishing on Newfoundland Banks. An Archives départementales service has been created in 1981. This article describes its administrative organisation, physical arrangements, material equipment, and gives an account of its first activities : physical protection of documents, arrangement and description of archives, census of private (non-public) archives in the Département, educational service, cultural activities, relations with French and Canadian Archives.
