Abstract

The following provides a detailed account of associations between stalked barnacles and copepods collected from elasmobranchs in the West Pacific Ocean. Ectoparasitic copepods were collected from blue sharks (Prionace glauca) and shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) caught as bycatch in the Eastern Tuna and Billfish longline fishery. Up to eight barnacles from the family Lepadidae were observed on three species of copepods; Pandarus satyrus, Dinemoura latifolia, and Ecthrogaleus coleoptratus. The majority were attached to the fourth dorsal plate with barnacle total length at times exceeding 60% of the copepod host length. Only the fourth study to document this type of association, it also identifies E. coleoptratus as a new host record for the family Lepadidae.
