Abstract
This paper represents the first in a series of publications dealing with the taxonomic circumscription and nomenclatural status of members of the Leotiaceae. Previously, workers such as Nannfeldt (1932), Dennis (1956) and Korf (1973) have attempted various taxonomic arrangements to accommodate the difficulties surrounding the systematics of these fungi. However, their treatments did not always include descriptions and designation of generic type species and their type specimens. We believe that through careful study of many specimens and of literature some of the extant taxonomic and nomenclatural problems will be rectified.
