Abstract

The present paper aims to recover the figure of Leon Despres de Cluny, a French sculptor active in Rio de Janeiro between 1861 and 1881. Despite having received limited attention within current art historiography, Leon Despres de Cluny produced a vast amount of works, in collaboration with important groups and often by official commission, thus achieving the highest artistic honors. In addition to his artistic production, he was one of the most important art dealers of his time, as he was responsible, both by means of his commercial company and later individually, for the sale of collections of old plaster molds acquired by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the 19th century
