Abstract

An analytical solution for determining the length of culverts is presented. This solution is sufficient to provide the full width of the roadway or the width of the embankment at the top of the culvert. The equations for the length (covering various intricacies of culvert installation for grades), angles, and over-structure situations are presented. Four cases are examined: (1) Culverts crossing at any angle, the roadway above being on a straight line; (2) culverts crossing at any angle, the roadway above being on a parabolic vertical curve; (3) culverts crossing at any angle, the roadway above being on a straight grade with a horizontal circular curve; and (4) culverts crossing at any angle, the roadway above being on a vertical curve with a horizontal circular curve. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the application of the equations.
