Abstract

An 80-year-old man presented with a 1-day history of high fever, sweats, rigors, and general malaise. Moreover, the patient described sore throat, odynophagia, and right-sided neck pain several days before admittance. His past medical history was significant for hypertension and coronary heart disease. Initial examination revealed fever (40°C), tachycardia (110 beats per min), with swelling, warmth, and tenderness in the right side of the neck, with no lymphadenopathy. Laboratory data showed leucocytosis (17·7×109 cells per L), and neutrophilia (16·1×109 cells per L).
