Abstract

The intention of this paper is to propose a holistic model of leisure that might inspire a renaissance of leisure as an exciting and vibrant paradigm that helps centre people's spirituality. Spirituality is about the path people follow in life and the experience of an inner presence of the divine or sacred as they follow this path. The first section will examine models of leisure from historical and contemporary perspectives then expand on the classical understanding of leisure as a state of freedom that emerges from engaging responsibly in all of time and activity and not just a segment of time or activity. Leisure accordingly embraces people's work, play, and worship. It helps foster an awakening and paying attention to life's purpose and what people most desire in life; namely a spirituality rooted in an inner presence of happiness and well‐being. The final and concluding section will focus on suggestions for inspiring such a renaissance.
