Abstract
This article provides an overview of some of the main legal aspects of forensic science in adversarial criminal justice systems. Beginning with the collection and management of samples, it discusses rules regulating the admission and presentation of expert evidence, particularly opinion evidence, through the examination, cross-examination, and reexamination of expert witnesses. The article also reviews judicial discretion, judicial instructions to jurors and appeals in relation to admissibility, and wrongful convictions. In addition to explaining the basic principles, the article incorporates the results of recent public inquiries, empirical studies, and reviews that pose serious questions about the adequacy of legal responses to forensic science evidence.
