Abstract
As a completely implantable total artificial heart (TAH) system, a motor-driven TAH system powered by a transcutaneous transformer system has been designed and built. The TAH system consists of a high-torque and low-speed dc brushless motor sandwiched between a pair of pusher-plate type ventricles. The unique aspects of this system include: (a) the left and right ventricles eject simultaneously like the natural heart; and (b) ejection of the ventricles is controlled by the filling of either ventricle, thus pump output can vary in response to changes in either left or right atrial pressure.
