Abstract
Abstract Adsorption of potassium on a nickel (100)-substrate was investigated by low energy electron diffraction (LEED). At a coverage of θ = 0.25 a well ordered c(4 × 2) superstructure is observed which is stable up to temperatures of about 200 K. LEED IV-spectra were measured using a computer controlled video system (AUTOLEED). In the full dynamical structure analysis both, bridge and on-top sites could be ruled out in favour of hollow adsorption sites yielding a Pendry R-factor of R = 0.25 for the best theory-experiment fit. The K-Ni layer spacing results to be 2.675 ± 0.05 A equivalent to a KNi bondlength of 3.20 ± 0.05 A or a K-radius of 1.96 ± 0.05 A. The topmost substrate layer spacing is identical to the nickel bulk value of 1.76 A within the limits of error.
