Abstract

This chapter focuses on the influence of former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui on the development of Taiwanese national identity. While presiding over major advancements in democratic reforms in Taiwan, Lee also promoted Taiwanization and played a leading role in the smooth transition from Chinese nationalism, which the Kuomintang (KMT) under Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo pushed, to Taiwanese nationalism. The chapter uses Lee Teng-hui’s speeches to analyze changes in his perspectives, focusing on the choices of words that Lee Teng-hui used in his speeches. Thus, the chapter examines the range of use for “we/us, word changes when Lee refers to the People’s Republic of China and changes in the use of names for Taiwan, such as “The Republic of China on Taiwan.
