Abstract
These notes are based on lectures given at the 2004 RTN String School at the University of Barcelona. The aim of these notes is to give a pedagogical introduction to unstable branes in string theory and open string tachyon condensation. The goal is to build the relevant physical features to summarize what unstable branes have taught us about time dependence in string theory and holography.
