Abstract

The artichoke has been used for a long time in kitchen and pharmacy. In the seventies of the 20 th century the current research concerning the pharmacological effects has begun. Choleretic, hepatoprotective, anticholestatic, lipid-lowering and anti arteriosclerotic effects are proven. Commission E recommends the artichoke in the case of dyspeptic complaints. The paper gives an overview of the current state of research concerning the use of artichoke extracts.
