Abstract
Appropriately, the focus of surgical residency training has shifted from service-based learning to the achievement of specific core competencies. At the same time, decreasing reimbursement, the implementation of the 80-h work week, administrative bureaucracy and pressures, and the public reporting of outcomes have made faculty members’ task of teaching residents much harder. Little is known about which strategies for surgical education and training are most effective in countering the challenges presented by current realities.
