Abstract

Purpose: The radiation therapy clinical simulation course at the University of Alberta combines a high-fidelity environment with scenarios involving cancer survivors as standardized patients. The students are required to apply cognitive knowledge, professionalism, communication, technical and critical thinking skills. Typical scenarios involve a pair of students setting up and delivering a simulated treatment with the associated patient care and education. This innovative approach to simulation-based education in radiation therapy is the first to integrate cancer survivors as standardized patients.
