Abstract
As an alternative approach to engine downsizing, boosted 2-stroke cycle in a poppet valve engine is proposed and researched. It has been shown the CAI combustion in the 2-stroke cycle could be easily achieved and it led to significant reduction in CO and uHC emissions than the SI combustion. In this work, further engine experiments have been performed on a single cylinder gasoline direct injection 4-vavles engine operating in the 2-stroke cycle with supercharging. Lean boost was investigated and shown to extend the engine load range of CAI combustion and bring about higher combustion and thermal efficiencies and lower CO and HC emissions.
