Abstract

Research on leader humility, though still in its infancy, suggests that leaders who seek to recognize the contributions of others, develop accurate self-appraisals, and grow in the face of feedback are valuable assets in today’s organizations. Results from these early studies indicate that leader humility positively relates to a host of organizationally-relevant outcomes like follower job satisfaction and job performance. However, several important questions remain unanswered that limit our understanding of this construct and hinder our ability to make sound recommendations to organizations. This symposium brings together a set of studies with diverse methods and approaches that address three core issues in the leader humility literature: a) a narrow perspective of the outcomes associated with leader humility, b) a lack of understanding of the conditions that impact its effectiveness, and c) limited attention paid to the accurate assessment of leader humility for both research and practice. After the presentations, Bradley Owens, a pioneer in leader humility research, will lead an interactive discussion with the audience.
