Abstract

Summary A new Nairovirus isolated from a spleen-kidney pool of a Mastomys erythroleucus trapped in the lower Omo valley, southern Ethiopia, is described. This virus belongs to the Qalyub group, but is clearly distinct from Qalyub and Bandia viruses by complement fixation tests. Thus, the Qalyub group of viruses is now composed of three agents, circulating in afrotropical rodents through Ornithodoros ticks which are probably their true natural reservoir. We propose, for the designation of this agent, the name «Omo virus.
