Abstract

The original form of the romantic drama, which was created in Poland in the thirties of the 19th century, is related to a transcendence crisis and a change of the vision of the world after French Revolution. This theater of participation combines metaphysics and politics and introduces to the stage, beside romantic plots of Nature and History, a new actor: the community, the nation. The monopoly basing of legitimate culture is removed from the institutional power by the commitment of ethical consensus into culture. At the same time the tie of the individual, responsible for the collective life, with the community that grants the individual his identity manages without institutional mediation and becomes direct. These three dramas by creating a form and an ideological tradition influenced not only political events (1968 riots), but also gave birth to many literary and drama masterpieces to follow, from Wyspianski or Gombrowicz to avant-garde artists, like Grotowski or Kantor.
