Abstract
Greek mysteries are defined by secrecy and individual application, but not by a concept of ‘privacy’ : they rather lead from isolation towards integration into an intimate and privileged community. Mysteries are not necessarily in conflict with the polis system ; problems that arise have different motifs and scenarios. The catastrophe of the Roman Bacchanalia was a unique event.
