Abstract

The Contribution of the Parisian Science Academy to the Exploration Expeditions during XIXth Century The Parisian Science Academy continued to promote scientific expeditions in the XIXth century. Scientists journey abroad permitted to collect information about distant geographic regions. The academicians tried to control these expeditions by defining scientific rules like instructions, mission’s reports, support to their publication. These rules permitted to control the results without travelling. Travellers accepted these conditions in exchange of the scientific label given by the Academy. However, as far as journeys were important and required a tidy budget, the political power intervention was necessary and controlled these travels. The Academy behaved then as a mediator between financial constraints dictated by political power and scientific targets defined by the explorers.
