Abstract
The Fox as a Symbol of Heresy in the Church Fathers' Polemics against the Gnostics The Church Fathers resorted to the zoologists of Antiquity for several eloquent symbols, which they used to describe the heretic. Among harmful animals, the fox attracted their attention. Its physical and psychic characteristics fitted in neatly with the heretic's conduct, as seen by the orthodox. The fox's cunning, deceit and ambiguousness illustrated the heretic's dealing with the Catholic Church.
