Abstract
Four species of Sabicea Aublet (Rubiaceae) are present in Sao Tome (Republique democratique de Sao Tome et Principe, gulf of Guinea): S. ingrata K.Schum., S. exellii G.Taylor, S. insularis (Wernham) G.Taylor and S. thomensis Joffroy. A principal component analysis undertaken for these species using morphological characters of herbarium specimens shows that S. insularis and S. ingrata cannot be easily separated. As a result the new combination S. ingrata var. insularis (Wernham) Joffroy is made. Distribution maps and an identification key for the four taxa of Sabicea in Sao Tome are presented. Relations between Sao Tome taxa and species of continental Africa are also discussed.
