Abstract
The crossing of central Pyrénées : constraints, practice and issues. Over a distance of 270 km, Central Pyrénées form a mountain barrier which has to be crossed by transport infrastructures : a necessity which is made even more pressing by the overloading of the passages at both extremities. The crossing is uneasy owing to the constraints of the mountain layout, which opposes the steep northern side to the interminable southern side. Few modern road or rail infrastructures cross this high mountain. There is always a time-lag between their opening and the economic and social demand. In the interplay between the parties, there are many clashes between the logic pursued by central administrations or operators and the distinctive identity- of strong-willed local authorities.
