Abstract

The Bavay basilica is a canonical building which ranks among the largest of that type (95 x 38 m and 4x14 pillars). Akin to that of Tarragona, from the Augustean period, it nevertheless only dates back to the Ilnd century A.D., at a time when this pattern of a «forum-block», of which the Nervii capital affords one of the best examples beside the classical settings of Augusta Raurica and insular Britain, definitely established itself. The systematic arrangement may be connected to some pre-ordained plan, originating from Rome itself, and widely adopted, so it seems, by the capitals of the civitates and which could thus correspond to a precise legal reality in the provinces of the Empire.
