Abstract
In 18th century Brazil, possessing certain books could be an indication of a transgression. Sharing certain ideas was enough to characterize a sui generis crime: le crime d’encyclopédisme. Luís Vieira da Silva, one of the members of the Insurreição Mineira, was incriminated because of his books. The objective of the work is to present what happened to his library as an important record of both Portuguese policy towards the colonies in America and the aversion to free thought defended, notably, by Enlightenment authors, considered worthy of censorship due to the revolutionary and critical influence of they exercised.
