Abstract

The structure of some liquid crystal polyesters having polyoxypropylene spacers of various length in the main chain is studied over a wide temperature range. It is shown that a liquid crystal phase is obtained when the MM of the flexible spacers is < 500. A nematic structure is observed in a polymer with a spacer of MM 400, whereas with small MM a smectic A-phase is obtained. The flexible spacers in the liquid crystal phase are in an unordered state as in an isotropic melt. The character of the structural changes in the range of polyesters studied is in agreement with that predicted on the basis of theoretical phase diagrams.
